Stephen Morrison joins the Green Machine family

Just after midday on Tuesday 17th April,
following a long sleepless flight from England,
Ngaruawahia’s latest signing landed at Auckland
airport and was met by Senior Coach Norm Rose.
Within hours he was at our Tuesday evening training
session with the lads. Steve Morrison is here for 12
months and will be turning out for the “Green
Machine”. The 23-year-old is an attacking midfielder
and was a trainee at Everton. He is a tall, elegant
midfielder with excellent passing ability.
Originally from Birkdale he won England
Under-16 honours as well as becoming a key member
of the Everton Under-18s side. He then graduated to
the Reserves setup and featured for Andy Holden’s
team on a regular basis before being released at the end
of the 2007/08 campaign.
He moved to Southport and then Skelmersdale
United before transferring in 2010 to Bala Town
(Wales).
Steve has funded his own trip from England to
Ngaruawahia and he has immediately become part of
the Ngaruawahia United family.

Everton virtually sowed the match up in
the first 35 minutes and took the lead rather
fortuitously after 25 minutes when
Morrison's corner was headed back into his
path and his low cross managed to squeeze
past the visitors' keeper between his legs.
The Everton midfielder almost had a
second immediately but this time the keeper
made a better effort and saved from a well-
struck free-kick. But it wasn't long before
they doubled their advantage with the
impressive Morrison again involved. His
superb right-wing cross was headed home by
Elder.
Everton controlled the match for much
of the second half, despite Stoke trying to get
back into it.

On 20 minutes, a cross from Aidan
Downes on the right hand-side found
Stephen Morrison at the far post who
comfortably headed past the Leeds ‘keeper.
Following the goal, the Blues grew in
confidence and became more settled,
limiting the home-side throughout the second
half to nothing but a series of long shots.
There were other opportunities to
increase the lead for Everton but in the end
they had to settle for returning to Merseyside
having scored just one but with the added
bonus of keeping a clean sheet
