NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION 1, 2010
This was the season in which a number of Northern League Clubs, which had withdrawn several years previously to
form their own Association, applied to be re-instated to the Northern League. In the wisdom of the Association, rather than
require those clubs to earn their way back as other new aspiring clubs are required to do, they and all other existing clubs
were placed in a “mixing bowl” to reorganise the divisions.
Ngaruawahia fared poorly in the results and rather than gaining entry to the Premier League as a result of the results
in 2009, we found ourselves down in the 2nd Division.

How the 2010 Northern League season worked
• At the completion of the grading round, top eight advance to the Premier League. All grading round points and results
are carried forward.
• Teams placed 9th, 12th, 13th, 16th, 17th go to Division 1A. No points or result are carried forward.
• Teams placed 10th, 11th, 14th, 15th, 18th go to Division 1B. No points or results are carried forward.
• At the completion of the Championship round, first-placed team is the 2010 Northern Premier League Champions. No
teams are relegated.
All this was organised to accept back into the competition those clubs that had withdrawn several years previously
to run their own competition. When those clubs found this “time out” was not successful they were included in an
elimination system with teams that were originally in the Northern League.
This left a puzzled vibe in those clubs that had stayed true to the Northern League. The question arose as to why
these returning club were not required to earn their right to a place in the league by doing what all other clubs were required
to do - work their way in via seasonal qualifying competitions!
