The Point
School
These two views are of what used to be “The Point” on the edge of Lake Kimihia (looking westward).
This was a small promontory that poked out into Lake Kimihia and was used extensively as a
swimming area. The grassed area in front used to be the lake until the removal of the overburden from the
opencast mine eventually filled it. The low shrub shown on the raised area in both photographs (arrowed)
is thought to be an original bush growing there in the late 1800s. From this location swimmers went out to
the island as well as using some semi-submerged tree trunks to dive off. These trunks were only visible at
the infrequent times that the lake level dropped.
